Antonio Russo Takes High Honors to NAC Spring All-Academic Team

WATERVILLE, Me. (June 7, 2019) – SUNY Delhi men's lacrosse junior defender and Second Team All-NAC choice Antonio Russo (Oneonta, NY / Oneonta) earned ultimate praise from the conference this week with a spot on the NAC Winter and Spring All-Academic Team. Russo completed his third year with the Broncos holding a 3.88 GPA majoring in Mechatronics.

The NAC Winter and Spring All-Academic Team recognizes student athletes on winter and spring season varsity sports teams who have earned a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Student-athletes must also have reached sophomore academic standing and competed in a minimum of two years of varsity competition at their institution.

Russo spearheaded a defensive unit in 2019 that caused 179 turnovers and cleared 267-of-336 attempts, as well as holding offenses to give the Broncos a combined 752-555 lead over opponents in shots this season and 447-310 in shots on goal. Delhi ranked first in the NAC with just 141 goals allowed, and even turned in a shutout performance in a 23-0 NAC win over Thomas on Mar. 30, holding the Terriers to just six shots, including four on goal. He was also an Outstanding Academic Achievement honoree at last month's SUNY Delhi Athletics awards ceremony, and is currently doing a mechatronics internship at Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source in Ithaca, N.Y.

The 2019 edition of the Broncos posted their best season under third-year head coach Sam Miller, earning the coach's first double-digit-win campaign with an 11-6 record, while quickly welcoming themselves as a formidable presence in their first year in the NAC and NCAA Division III. Despite being ranked sixth out of seven teams in the conference's preseason poll, the Broncos cruised to dominating wins in their first five NAC games – 12-5 vs. Maine Maritime on Mar. 16, 12-5 at Husson on Mar. 23, 23-0 vs. Thomas on Mar. 30, 22-3 at NVU Johnson on April 6, and 14-7 at NVU Lyndon on April 13. Delhi also overcame an 0-2 start to the year after defeats down in Virginia to Randolph and Bridgewater, starting with winning its next six games for its highest win streak of the season.

SUNY Delhi clinched a spot in the NAC/NECC Tournament with its NAC victory over NVU Lyndon. The Broncos wrapped up their NAC regular season on April 20 against SUNY Canton in a battle for first place in the NAC and tournament home field advantage rights. In a hotly-contested game that lived up to its billing, the Roos edged out a 10-9 win. Delhi faced the NECC's top seed in New England College in the opening round on April 27, where the Broncos' season ended with a 12-3 defeat.
