NORTHFIELD, Vt. (April 13, 2019) – For the first time in his career, head coach Sam Miller has a ten-win season, as well as a postseason berth, as his Broncos took a 14-7 NAC win versus Northern Vermont Lyndon Saturday at Norwich University. And with the help of SUNY Canton defeating Husson later on in the day in their conference matchup, Delhi clinched a spot in the NAC/NECC Tournament with two more regular season games to be played. Coach Miller's team is now 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the NAC.
The Broncos overcame a 5-2 deficit after one quarter to score four goals apiece in the final three periods, while shutting out the Hornets in the second quarter and allowing just one goal in the third and fourth. Malik Talbert (four goals, one assist), John Rohan (three goals, two assists), Travis Biggs (three goals, two assists) and Brandon McGrath (one goal, four assists) all had five-point days to lead the Broncos' scoring.
Talbert got the first score of the day to give Delhi an early 1-0 lead, and when Lyndon answered with two straight to take the lead, Talbert scored again on a man-up chance to tie things up at 2-2. But three straight Hornets goals put Delhi in a three-goal hole at quarter's end. Yet true to form, Delhi got back on track, with its defense keeping Lyndon scoreless throughout the second for the offense to reel off four in the quarter to lead, 6-5, at halftime. The Broncos carried on in the third with two more unanswered for an 8-5 lead, and while the Hornets picked up a goal to cut it down to two, Delhi persisted with goals by McGrath and Talbert to enter the fourth up, 10-6. Delhi went on to outscore Lyndon again, 4-1, in the final period to preserve the win.
Freshman goalie Travis Anderson finished with nine saves on 16 shots faced, improving his NAC-leading totals with an 8.00 goals against average and 147 totals saves, while continuing to rank second with a 56.8 save percentage. Rohan boosted his league-leading scoring total to 64 points and 52 goals. Talbert still ranks second in the NAC with 56 points and 43 goals, and is now three goals away from reaching 100 career goals in a landmark three-year career with the Broncos; he has 131 career points on 97 goals and 34 assists. McGrath jumped his conference-best assists total to 29, and ranks fifth in the NAC with 40 points.
The Broncos handled the Hornets Saturday by outshooting their hosts, 51-28, and forcing them into 14 turnovers. Delhi cashed in on 2-of-7 extra-man chances and converted on 13-of-15 clear attempts. Faceoff man Nick Dower won 20-of-25 possession battles.
With a playoff spot in hand, the Broncos will host SUNY Canton next Saturday, April 20 at 1:00 p.m. in their NAC season finale for the right to earn home field advantage for the NAC/NECC Tournament. Canton, who beat Husson, 16-13 in a late-afternoon conference contest Saturday, is the lone remaining NAC team with an unbeaten conference record, standing at 6-6 overall and 4-0 in league play. Delhi will then play at Mount Saint Vincent to finish out the regular season on Wednesday, April 24 at 5:00 p.m.
The semifinals for the NAC/NECC Tournament will be Saturday, April 27, with the number-one NAC team hosting the number-two NECC team and vice versa. The finals will be Saturday, May 4, slated to be held at the site of the highest remaining NAC seed.
