Men's Golf Takes Runners-Up at USCAA Championships; Fisher, Christy Earn All-American

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (October 9, 2018) – The SUNY Delhi men's golf team posted their best-ever two-day performance at the USCAA National Championships, finishing Tuesday with a 292 score from their 291 showing on day one to maintain their second-place position with a 583 total. The Broncos placed behind St. Mary of the Woods, who won the team title with a 569 total (283, 286). The 19-team competition took place at the par-72, 6,305-yard Penn State Blue Course.

Alex Fisher (142) earned First Team All-American after his 70 score Tuesday, a two-stroke improvement from day one, moved the Great Valley, NY native up to fourth place. Daniel Christy (146), a Canton, NY native, earned Second Team honors, scoring 73 on both days to take ninth place. Russell Herbert (147) landed in 16th place with a 72 score after ending day one in 24th with a 75 score. Aaron Oliver (148) took 18th place with a 77 score, having shot 71 on day one. Jonathan Smolen (152) rounded out the team scoring in 28th place with a second-day total of 77 and a first day score of 75.

Brandon Palmer (Norfolk, NY / Norwood-Norfolk), who competed individually, was named the USCAA's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year for his extraordinary efforts towards the campus and greater community. He shot a 73 Tuesday, improving by three strokes from his Monday total to place 20th at 149. Palmer, along with Christy and sophomore Zach Barrett, were named to the USCAA All-Academic Team for their academic achievements as Business and Professional Golf Management majors.

In addition, a skills competition was held Monday evening following day one of the tournament, where Herbert won the long drive event, and Fisher winning the chipping match.

Head coach Dave Arehart's team looks to carry their momentum to their first-ever North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championships, beginning Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Country Club of Vermont in Waterbury, Vt.
