STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (October 10, 2017) – After finishing near the top the previous two years, the SUNY Delhi men's golf team finally broke through with their first-ever USCAA National Championship on Tuesday at the Penn State Blue Golf Course. The Broncos, who were fifth after day one with a 309 and trailing first-place Cleary by eleven strokes, combined for a year-best 295 on the final day for a 604, finishing five strokes ahead of the pack. Cleary was second with a 609, with St. Mary of the Woods in third with a 611, Georgia Northwest Technical fourth at 616 and The Apprentice School fifth at 617. The course was a par 72 and 6,605 yards.

Freshman Russell Herbert shot a 73 on day two, finishing tied for first individually with Saint Mary of the Woods' Colton Kuppler with a 145 two-day total. Russell would end up placing second as Kuppler birdied to win the tiebreaker hole on 18. Herbert's performance landed him first-team All-USCAA accolades, while sophomore Aaron Oliver earned second-team national honors after finishing with a 153, shooting a 74 in the final round. Senior Joseph Burgin was named to the USCAA All-Academic team with a 3.64 GPA as a Business and Professional Golf Management double major. He placed 25th with a 156 as Delhi's lone individual participant.

Alex Fisher improved by eight strokes from his first day with a 73, finishing 16th at 154. Ryan Florack and Jonathan Smolen finished tied for 36th with a 158. Smolen shot a 75 Tuesday, another eight-stroke improvement from Monday for the Broncos, while Florack carded an 81 after a 77 on day one.

Tuesday's win capped a remarkable fall season for the Broncos, who also won the NIAC Championships on their own College Golf Course last weekend with a 598 combined score. Oliver won the league individual crown with a 147, including an even 72 on day one. Delhi also captured a pair of team wins at the Keuka Fall Invitational and Utica Invitaional, while defeating The Apprentice School, 309-311, in their season opener. Since joining the USCAA in 2015, Delhi placed second in their inaugural national championship appearance, and seventh last fall.
