Men Tie Season High in Threes to Topple Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (December 8, 2018) – The SUNY Delhi men's basketball team returned convincingly to win the win column on Saturday, taking control from the beginning on their way to a 94-78 triumph at Houghton. With the help of tying a season best with a dozen 3-pointers, including five from Justin Daoud, along with a 47-34 lead in rebounds and 40-8 in bench points, Delhi improved to 5-5 on the year, ending a two-game losing streak. 

The Broncos grabbed the lead for good early on a Jordan Fragale jumper to give them a 7-6 lead with 18:16 left in the first half. This was followed by ten consecutive Delhi points as the men dropped 59 on Houghton in the first session, including nine 3-pointers, and ballooned their lead to as much as 27 points before entering the half ahead, 59-39. The men pressed on by bolstering their lead to as many as 32 points in the second half that carried them to victory. Arguably, their main threat on the evening was Highlander Dylan Lambert, who totaled 37 of the home team's points.

Daoud produced a double-double with a team-high 22 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, along with Fragale, who notched 14 points, 12 assists, five rebounds and five steals. Mavenson Therneus dropped 17 points, while William Knight tallied 14 points with four rebounds and four assists. Saquan Goland pulled down 13 rebounds, while Carlos Ithier logged nine points and Norman Wilson seven points.

The Broncos made 45.0 percent from the field (36-for-80) and 12-of-35 3-pointers, as Houghton made 49.1 percent (27-for-55) and 5-of-21, respectively. Delhi also converted on 10-of-17 free throws to the Highlanders' 19-of-27. The defense forced the home team into 16 turnovers, which led to a 22-9 lead in points off turnovers.

Coach Zack Thomsen's squad has one week off before completing their slate prior to winter break. This includes a road contest at Morrisville State on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2:00 p.m., followed by visiting Green Mountain the following Monday at 7:30 p.m.
