HIALEAH, Fla. (January 5, 2018) – It took seven games, but despite as much as an early 15-point lead, the SUNY Delhi men's basketball team tasted defeat for the first time in over a month at the expense of Virgin Islands by a 75-67 score. In the Broncos' second game of their three-game stay at the Florida National Beach Bash, the defeat ended the team's six-game winning streak to stand at 9-8.

Oddly enough, Delhi's last defeat was against Florida National back on Dec. 1 in Floyd L. Maines Arena. Coach Zack Thomsen's team will face the Conquistadors Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Four Broncos scored in double figures Friday, with William Knight and Carlos Ithier leading the team with 14 points apiece. Knight made 4-of-12 3-pointers and Ithier 3-of-8 from behind the arc. Forwards Saquan Goland and Payton Dean each netted ten points, with Goland adding eight rebounds. Jordan Fragale registered six points and seven assists, while Damon Denteh added seven points. Stephen Harten finished with six rebounds and hit one triple for three points.

Another highlight on day two came after the game. During halftime of the later contest between Florida National and Blue Lights, Fragale was honored as one of the tournament's four Scholar Athletes. The sophomore Accounting major is the Delhi men's leading scholar.

Harten's sole three of the game gave the Broncos their largest lead at 21-6 with 13:49 to play in the first half. Delhi maintained a sizable lead over the next several minutes before Virgin Islands eventually tied the game at 30-30 with 5:59 to go in the period. This occurred in the middle of a UVI 19-2 scoring run, which saw them jump out to a 40-32 lead with 2:38 left in the half, and taking a 47-36 advantage into the locker room. The closest the Broncos came in the second half was dwindling UVI's lead down to six at 73-67 with less than one minute to play.

Virgin Islands had two players with 20-point double-doubles, with Williams netting 23 points with ten rebounds and Gosh landing 20 points with ten boards. Delhi made six threes in the first half, but only made three in the second as they trailed UVI in field goal percentage, 46.3 (25-for-54) to 33.8 (24-for-71). The Broncos led, 24-19, in bench points and 17-14 in second-chance points, but were slighted, 46-42, in rebounds.
