Men Cruise to 81-75 Win Over Houghton, Grow Win Streak to Three

DELHI, N.Y. (December 9, 2017) – SUNY Delhi men's basketball captured their third straight win Saturday afternoon, hosting and defeating Houghton by an 81-75 mark. The Broncos stand at 6-7 after starting the year at 0-4, with Saturday's win marking the team's second three-game winning streak of the season. Delhi is now 2-1 this year against NCAA Division III opponents.

After both sides exchanged leads three times to start the game, along with four ties, Delhi went ahead for good, 15-14, on a Payton Dean layup with 11:31 remaining in the first half. The Broncos grew their lead to 44-29 by halftime, and led by as much as 25 points in the second half. That didn't stop the Highlanders, though, from trimming the lead to as little as five in the closing minutes. After Houghton cut the lead down to 74-69 with 1:48 to play, William Knight responded soundly with a 3-pointer to maintain the Broncos' advantage. Delhi preserved the win by way of the free throw line, where Knight, Carlos Ithier and Jordan Fragale were each successful on their trips after being intentionally fouled.

Ithier led the Broncos with 17 points, making 2-of-7 from 3-point range, while Dean registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jake Slobe connected on 4-of-9 from downtown on his way to 14 points, with Fragale notching 11 points and going 2-for-5 from behind the arc. Terrance McBride drilled a pair of threes on his way to an eight-point day, and Saquan Goland had four points and nine rebounds.

Delhi shot 41.1 percent (30-for-73) on the night and 11-for-33 from 3-point range, while Houghton shot 48.3 percent (29-for-60) and 12-for-29, respectively. The Broncos hit on 10-of-14 from the charity stripe to the Highlanders' 5-of-9, and led, 31-16, in bench points and 16-8 in second-chance points. Delhi also registered 20 points off 17 Houghton turnovers, and held a slight 42-38 lead on the glass.
